No Wi-Fi? No problem. A new service makes it easy to tune in to Net radio—even over the iPhone's poky EDGE connection—although you shouldn't expect crystal-clear audio quality.

Discovered by the Macheads at the Unofficial Apple Weblog, FlyTunes lets you browse about 350 Net radio stations and podcasts; just navigate to FlyTunes.fm on your iPhone or iPod Touch to get started.

A series of drop-down menus lets you choose between high-… Continue

American Airlines to charge $15 for first checked bag

American Airlines is so deeply troubled (compounded by the crushing effects of inflated oil prices) it's now come to this: You'll have to pay 15 bucks to check your first piece of baggage when you choose it to fly the increasingly hostile skies.

This week American said it would axe about 12 percent of its flight schedule, layoff an undetermined number of workers, and retire some 50 planes (which had already been grounded for faulty wiring).… Continue

Good news, Dior lovers: More pictures, and details, of the upcoming Dior mobile phone have emerged. We knew the fashion house was introducing a luxury handset after images of the phone appeared online, but the pictures didn't really reveal anything about specifications, pricing and color.

Lucky for us, an article on the Wall Street Journal gives us a few more details regarding the designer phone, which will be initially… Continue

Closing the Door to Microsoft Vista

by Aaron Ricadela

General Motors (GM) may take a detour around Vista, the latest computer operating system from Microsoft (MSFT). The automaker has encountered so many speed bumps getting Vista to work on its machines that it may just wait for the next version of Windows, due in 2010 or 2011. "We're considering bypassing Vista and going straight to Windows 7," says GM's Chief Systems & Technology Officer Fred… Continue

Are Unlimited Calling Plans a Bargain or an Up-Sell?

I love it when big companies vie for first place. You know who the winner is, don't you? That would be us.

The latest buzzword in mobile phone-speak is unlimited calling. The first salvo came from Verizon Wireless earlier in the week. It introduced an unlimited calling plan for $99.99 a month. On the plan, you get unlimited… Continue

Sprint's WiMAX dreams get a $3.2B shot in the arm

Just a month ago, Sprint's plans for a national, $5 billion WiMAX network looked decidedly shaky; the planned launch of a handful of markets was delayed, Sprint's balance sheet looked iffy, and rumors that tech titans such as Google, Comcast, and Time Warner would come to the rescue didn't materialize.

But today's announcement gives Sprint's hopes for a national WiMAX network—one that could potentially bathe the country in wireless broadband… Continue

Stiffer penalties for pirates on the way

New legislation which toughen penalties for software piracy (including music, movies, and computer programs) passed a big test in the House recently. The House of Representatives Judiciary Committee approved the new propsal known as the Prioritizing Resources and Organization for Intellectual Property (Pro-IP) Act, sending it to the floor of the House for debate and a vote. (That debate has already been underway this week.)

Hands-on with Samsung's touchscreen Glyde

On paper, the just-announced Glyde has almost everything it needs to trump the iPhone, including 3G data access, GPS, and slide-out QWERTY keypad. But touchscreen phones need great user interfaces to go with them, and the Glyde's—like many of the UIs on the latest touch phones—falls well short.

Set to go on sale this month on Verizon Wireless, the Samsung Glyde (available May 9 for… Continue

FTC: Kids having a tougher time buying M-rated games

Today's kids are having much more trouble buying M-rated games than I ever did sneaking into R-rated movies, according to a new government report.

Ars Technica got its hands on a recent survey by the Federal Trade Commission, which sent a squad of secret shoppers—13-to-16-year-olds, to be exact—to retailers across the country. One of Windows Vista's biggest selling points was that it was the only way you could DirectX 10, the software component that would be required to play the very latest video games in their full glory.
